Early Symptoms

Mesothelioma symptoms often mimic more common conditions, which contributes to delayed diagnosis. Common early symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

Peritoneal mesothelioma may present with abdominal pain, swelling, nausea, or changes in bowel habits.

Diagnostic Process

Diagnosis typically involves:

  1. Imaging — chest X-ray, CT scan, PET scan to identify pleural thickening, fluid, or masses
  2. Biopsy — tissue sample is required for definitive diagnosis; thoracoscopy or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is the preferred method
  3. Pathology — immunohistochemistry distinguishes mesothelioma from lung cancer and other malignancies
  4. Staging — determines extent of disease and guides treatment planning

Why Prompt Diagnosis Matters Legally

Iowa’s current statute of limitations for asbestos personal injury claims is 5 years from the date of diagnosis. The clock starts when a patient receives a diagnosis — not when symptoms begin.

Legislation is currently pending in the Iowa Senate that would reduce this deadline to 2 years — but that bill has not been signed into law. Until it is, the deadline remains 5 years.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease, the legal deadline is running from your diagnosis date. Do not wait to consult an attorney.
